Limited (Short) Scar Breast Reduction
As discussed in the breast reduction section, our surgeons at Premier Plastic Surgery of Texas in Plano are well-trained and experienced in performing this body image changing procedure. In the procedure, excess fat, glandular tissue, and skin are removed from large breasts. In the traditional method, the incisions are designed to be an inverted T or anchor shape as shown in the below image.

While this method is very safe and reliable and the most common approach to breast reduction surgery in the United States, there are some drawbacks. Any time the length of a scar is increased, there is more likelihood of developing more noticeable scars. In particular, the horizontal scar that is in the breast crease has a tendency to thicken especially in darker skinned females. Also, there is often the need for minor revisional surgery due to bunching of skin at the ends of the horizontal scar. Finally, the overall breast shape has a tendency to be slightly boxy.
A more recent trend in plastic surgery has been the so called limited (short) scar or vertical breast reduction. In this version of the procedure, the horizontal scar in the breast crease is eliminated. This leaves only the round scar around the areola and the vertical scar which often heals very well. These scars are illustrated in the image below.

The benefits of this approach are not only shorter scars but also often a better overall breast shape. Some patients describe it as a "perky" appearance. Finally, the need for scar revisions while present, is often less than with the traditional approach.
Dr. Naveen Setty has brought this technique to Premier Plastic Surgery of Texas and to the Plano area. Not all patients are candidates for this approach and during your consultation, the best approach will be decided with you. So, if you are a patient interested in breast reduction in Plano and would like more information about the limited scar technique, please call the office or schedule a consultation.
